  1. Leah Stetson Says:

I used to volunteer at an animal shelter in upstate NY and made a promise to the dogs and cats there: I would adopt adult animals, not kittens and puppies. I have two rescue cats and one rescue dog. My dog is a 3 yr old pointer-dachshund from Arkansas, who was abused and abandoned on the side of a highway. I learned about her story on petfinder.com and she was brought up to Maine on a doggie bus. (I have heard some disturbing theories about southern animal shelter programs taking advantage of northeastern animal-lovers but I know I’ve made a difference in this dog’s life.) She came to me underweight, malnourished and timid. She’s now healthy, confident, vocal and energetic, well-loved and gets along well with other dogs. When I walk her and we encounter people with rescue dogs, they tell me I was lucky because my dog is so well-adjusted; she doesn’t growl at people or dogs, and she’s great with kids. The fur on her belly has grown over to hide the ciggerette burn marks she had when I first adopted her Sept. ’09 and she’s over her abandonment issues. She’s not perfect but she’s pretty well-behaved! I have been so overjoyed with having her in my life. We swim and hike together. She’s a great companion and a decent “guard-dog” when she wants to be.
